Create a family with IUI treatment

IUI is a commonly used fertility treatment for same-sex female couples, single women, or heterosexual couples. Speak with an advisor and we’ll figure out if it’s the right treatment for you.

What’s IUI?

IUI, or Intrauterine Insemination, is a commonly used fertility treatment where sperm are injected directly into the womb during a short procedure. Artificial insemination is also a term used to describe IUI. The type of treatment can be carried out during a natural ovulation cycle, or with female hormone therapy to stimulate egg production.

IUI vs IVF: which is right for me?

IUI treatment is a less invasive and more natural form of treatment than IVF, often used as a treatment with donor sperm However, if there is a problem with your partner's sperm, or you have an infertility diagnosis, the chances of pregnancy can decrease. For this reason, it’s common that multiple cycles of IUI are necessary, or IVF is offered as an alternative treatment should you not fall pregnant.

How IUI fertility treatment works

IUI uses a method called sperm washing to separate better quality sperm from immobile or abnormally shaped sperm. These are then directly injected into the womb.

The IUI process

1
Ovulation tests
For natural IUI treatment, our specialists will begin by carrying out tests to determine the correct time of ovulation.
2
Hormone therapy
In the case of stimulated IUI treatment, patients will also begin with hormone therapy, to assist egg production in the ovaries.
3
Sperm processing
Following this, the donor or partner sperm is washed and processed, leaving only the most active sperm remaining. Insemination is a quick and simple procedure, where the washed sperm is inserted into the uterus using a fine catheter.
4
You take a pregnancy test
Finally, a pregnancy test will be taken, usually around two weeks later. Our advisors will be there to discuss next steps following the pregnancy test.

FAQs about IUI

How is IUI different from natural conception?

IUI is a type of fertility treatment whereby sperm is directly placed into the womb. This is known as artificial insemination which requires medical intervention, unlike natural conception where sperm travels through the cervix and to the fallopian tubes to fertilise an egg.

Is IUI more successful than IVF?

IUI can require more cycles than IVF, particularly if either individual has severe fertility issues. However it’s a good starting point for those with low sperm quality or ovulation issues.

How long is the IUI process?

The IUI process takes around four weeks from initial testing to taking a pregnancy test, however this can vary depending on the time of your ovulation.

Can IUI be successful with low AMH?

IUI is a good option for those with low AMH levels and ovarian reserve. It may however take multiple cycles to be successful.
